Pioneer Survivor Skills (Grade 2 and Grade 4)

Be a survivor in early Alberta using your newly acquired prairie skills.

Watch demonstrations:

Flight Engineering (Grade 3 and Grade 6)

Come on down and let's play Fly or Flop. Students look at a variety of early airplane designs and guess which ones got off the ground and which ones did not.

Students discuss the importance of design and materials in the development of an airplane, and are introduced to the experiments of Alexander Graham Bell, with the tetrahedral kite.

Hands-on

  • Each student builds a kite to fly.

Grades: Grade 3, Grade 6

Dates available: All year

Total time: 1 hour (additional 30 to 45 minutes to complete the kite offline)

Mighty Machines (Grade 4)

Students:

  • Review simple machines and lever classifications
  • Learn speed and force advantage through demonstrations of a Penny Farthing bicycle, a tricycle, and an antique engine
  • Explore how a cream separator separates milk and cream using gears and simple

Hands-on

  • Students recreate the lever demonstration at home or in the classroom using easy-to-find supplies

The Alphabet Machine

These interactive programs introduce students to some of the fun and sometimes quirky machines found at the Reynolds-Alberta Museum! Supplies needed are kept to a minimum and designed using simple and easy to find items. 

Each program includes a Museum Educator guided:

  • presentation and
  • a game or craft (supply list available from Booking Coordinator)

Grades: Pre-school, K-2

Dates available:

  • November/December
    • T is for Tractor
    • S is for Snow
  • January/February
    • E is for Elevator
    • V is for Valentine
  • March
    • A is for Animal

Total Time: 30 minutes

Cost: $50 per program (1 class up to 30 students)

  • A sound and video test may be required prior to the program

Electricity on the Move (Grade 5)

Not available for virtual school

Students explore electricity and circuits as they make an electric car. They:

  • Discover the historical and contemporary significance of electric cars
  • Discuss the hazards of short circuits and the importance of following instructions

Hands-on

  • Each student builds a vehicle, which uses a battery-powered electric motor to produce motion

Grades: Grade 5

Dates available: All year

Total time: 2 hours (two 1-hour sessions or one 2-hour session)

Cost: $8 per student, Minimum fees may apply

Flight FUNdamentals (Grade 6)

Students explore flight, air, and aerodynamics with fun, hands-on activities.

  • Investigate a variety of aircraft configurations and how they operate
  • Review the four forces of flight
  • Discuss Bernoulli's Principal and the importance of airfoils
  • Identify the control surfaces and major components of our 1940 Stinson aircraft

Hands-on

  • Observe the two experiments on lift with easy to find supplies.
  • Students will recreate theses experiments at home or in the classroom and discuss the results with the Museum Educator.

Grades: Grade 6

Total time: 1 hour

  • Take a close look at how simple machines translate energy into motion, speed and force.
  • Explore practical applications of simple machines using a cream separator, a Penny Farthing bicycle, and a tricycle
